Shnayder, Walters, Morant Qualify for NCAA Gymnastics Regionals

2014 NCAA Gymnastics Regional Qualifiers Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.), sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) and freshman Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) will represent the Brown gymnastics team at the 2014 NCAA Gymnastics Regionals, it was announced during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday. The most Brown gymnasts to ever qualify for a single NCAA regional event, the trio will head to the University Park Regional hosted by Penn State on April 5 to battle for two all-around qualifying spots at the NCAA Championship.

Sophomore specialist Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) will serve as an alternate on bars at Regionals. Her Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) was tied for first in the region with Cornell's Melanie Jorgensen, but the Big Red's representative received the selection based on tie-breaking criteria.

On the heels of the program's first-ever ECAC Championship and back-to-back Ivy Classic titles, the regional qualifiers are the first for Brown since Emily Lutfey earned an all-around bid in 2011. Previously, Brown had not qualified more than two gymnasts in a single season, dating back to 2003 when Jayne Finst and Gina Verge competed in all-around.

Shnayder, a three-time USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals participant and First Team All-Ivy selection, is 12th in the region and fourth in the ECAC with a 38.665 all-around RQS. Named the ECAC Gymnast of the Week after earning Brown's top score on floor in the Bears' season-opening meet on Jan. 19, Shnayder owns the team's best floor average (9.777) and second-best all-around average (38.418).

Walters, a three-time ECAC Gymnast of the Week selection, won the Ivy Classic All-Around title after setting personal records in all four events and leading the Bears to their second straight Ivy Classic title in February. She ranks 10th in the region and second in the ECAC with a 38.760 all-around RQS.

Morant becomes Brown's first ECAC Rookie of the Year since World Floor Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Alicia Sacramone took the honor in 2007. The five-time ECAC Rookie of the Week won the ECAC all-around and beam titles with scores of 38.975 and 9.800, respectively. Her 38.715 all-around RQS is the third-best in the ECAC and her 9.800 on floor is 23rd in the region.

Chretien, winner of four ECAC Weekly Awards this season, stands 12th in the region on bars with a 9.810 RQS. She turned in a career high and tied the school record on bars with a 9.875 at William & Mary on March 14, leading the Bears to a new school record team total of 194.225. At the previous weekend's home meet, she set a then-career-best 9.850 on bars to earn first place and help Brown set a new school record of 48.800 in the event.
