BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.) and sophomore Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) each scored 9.775 for third place on floor and bars, respectively, and freshman Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) placed second in the all-around standings with a 38.400, but the Brown gymnastics team was edged by a tough Bridgeport squad, 194.675-191.025, on Thursday evening. Despite missing the victory, the Bears broke the 191-point mark for the sixth straight meet and the seventh time in eight outings.
Brown opened on vault and posted a 47.800 team score, led by senior Rebecca Freedman's (Plainview, N.Y.) fourth-place finish with a 9.725. Junior Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, N.Y.) and Morant tied for sixth with matching 9.600 scores.
The Bears had their best showing on the night on bars, scoring 48.325 on the strength of Chretien's 9.775. Sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) placed sixth with a 9.700 in her first outing since being crowned the Ivy Classic All-Around Champion.
On beam, sophomore Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) finished third and logged a season-high 9.650, as the Bears scored a 46.975 as a squad. Shnayder rounded out the top five with a 9.550.
Brown finished with the floor exercise and saw Shnayder lead the way in third place, earning a 9.775 to secure a 38.100 all-around score. Morant (9.725) grabbed fourth and Walters and freshman Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) tied for fifth with 9.625. A team score of 47.925 left the Bears several points behind the victorious Purple Knights, but not before Holman's season-best beam performance and a career-best showing for Williams on beam.
A quick turnaround pits the Bears against West Chester and Bridgeport on Sunday. First rotation is scheduled for 1 p.m.
