Gymnastics Posts Best-Ever Season Opening Score in Third Place Finish at UNH

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, MI) placed second on the uneven parallel bars to help the Brown gymnastics team set a program record for a season-opening score (192.550) en route to a third place finish at the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Invitational on Sunday. No. 24 Minnesota took first place (196.025), while UNH took second (193.700) and Yale finished fourth (187.500).

Freshman Caroline Morant (Chicago, IL) and senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) placed fourth (38.625) and fifth (38.550), respectively, in the all-around standings.

Junior Allison Rubenstein (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) scored 9.650 on beam to place seventh and lead the Bears to a 47.350 team score to start off the day. Shnayder turned in a 9.525 performance for 12th and sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, TX) scored a 9.500 to take 13th.

Moving on to floor, Morant and Shnayder shared a hold of eighth place with a pair of 9.800 routines to boost the team score to 48.425.

On vault, Brown rode the strength of a 9.750 by Morant. Five Brown gymnasts placed consecutively from 13th to 17th, beginning with Walters' 9.700 showing that gave the Bears a team score 48.325 in the event.

Brown saved its strongest showing for last and posted a 48.450 on bars, trailing first-place Minnesota (49.100) by a mere 0.65. Chretein led the way with a 9.825 to earn second place on Brown's highest individual score of the day. Morant grabbed her third top-10 finish of the meet with a seventh-place 9.750 and Walters took ninth (9.725).

The Bears continue their defense of the 2013 Ivy Classic title when they head to No. 16 Rutgers on Jan. 24.
