SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA – The Brown gymnastics team turned in a solid performance on Friday night, combining for a team score of 189.900 to take third place behind San Jose State and Utah State in a meet held at the Spartan Gym on the campus of San Jose State University. Senior Nicole Abdo's (Largo, FL) season-best score of 9.775 on the floor exercise and junior Michelle Shnayder's (Lincolnshire, IL) fifth place finish in the all-around competition with a score of 37.200 highlighted the evening for the Bears.
The squad turned in a score of 48.100 on the vault, an event that they have competed strongly on in the early meets of the season. Sophomore Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, NY) and junior Rebecca Freedman (Plainview, NY) led the Bears, tying for eighth place with a score of 9.650. Senior Emily Lutfey (Los Angeles, CA) tied for the 11th spot with a 9.625, and freshman Diana Walters (Austin, TX) turned in a 9.600 to tie for 13th. Shnayder and junior Katie Rogers (Bethesda, MD) tied for 15th, each earning a score of 9.575 for the Bears.
Freshman Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, MI) produced Brown's best performance on the bars, adding a 9.600 to the team total of 46.825 on the apparatus, and tying for ninth place. Abdo finished in 11th with a 9.525, and senior co-captain Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA) scored a 9.400 to tie for 13th. Her co-captain, senior Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC), was right behind her in 15th, earning a score of 9.375, while Shnayder took the 16th spot with an 8.925.
Brown produced a team score of 47.450 on the beam and sophomore Allison Rubenstein (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) led the way with a 10th place finish and a score of 9.625. Holman was just behind her in 11th with a 9.600, while Shnayder and Abdo tied for 12th, each with a score of 9.550. Lutfey tied for 14th, earning a 9.125 for her routine, while Walters received an 8.850, good for 18th, when she lead the Bears off on the apparatus.
An impressive score of 9.775 from Abdo sparked a Brown team total of 47.525 on the floor exercise, as the senior finished in a tie for fifth place. Hoffman earned an 11th place finish for the Bears, contributing a season-best score of 9.600, while Lutfey tied for 12th with a 9.525. Holman and Shnayder took 14th and 15th with scores of 9.475 and 9.150, respectively, while Walters finished in 17th place with an 8.875.
The Bears were strong against stiff competition from the west coast, as San Jose ended the day in first place with a score of 194.550, just ahead of Utah State with a 193.225.
Brown will remain in California for the weekend, competing again on Monday, February 18 at Berkley with San Jose State. Competition will begin at 7:00pm on the west coast.
