NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY – The Brown gymnastics team put forth another impressive showing on Saturday evening, combining for a score of 191.850 to take third place in a meet at the Livingston Rec Center on the campus of Rutgers University. The Bears broke their school record on the vault for a second consecutive weekend, registering a team score of 48.625 on the apparatus, while freshman Diana Walters (Austin, TX) and junior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) earned the top two spots in the all-around competition. Walters compiled a personal-best score of 38.475 over the course of four events, while Shnayder was right behind her with a 38.175.
"The team was tested tonight," said head coach Sara Carver-Milne. "We started out rough on bars and fought through some mistakes on beam as well. The team's determination and fight through the rest of the competition was incredible. We came through with a new school record on vault for the second week in a row and a solid team total. In addition, freshman Diana Walters won the all-around for the Bears!"
Brown started the day on the uneven bars, earning a team total of 46.800 in the event. Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, MI) and Nicole Abdo (Largo, FL) were the Bears' top finishers, tying for the ninth spot with a score of 9.575. Walters followed closely in 12th with a 9.475, while senior co-captain Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC) was 15th with a 9.200. Shnayder was awarded an 8.975, good for 19th, while senior co-captain Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA) added an 8.925 to take the 20th spot.
Senior Emily Lutfey (Los Angeles, CA) sparked a combined score of 47.925 on beam for the Bears, earning a 9.775 and finishing in seventh. Allison Rubenstein (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) was also impressive, finishing in a tie for 10th with a 9.675. Shnayder and Walters finished 12th and 13th respectively, earning scores of 9.650 and 9.625. Abdo took the 10th spot with a 9.200, and freshman Corey Holman (Westford, MA) finished in 22nd with a 9.150.
The Bears were solid across the line-up on the floor, pulling together for a 48.500 led by Shnayder, who earned sixth place with a 9.800. Holman found herself in a three-way tie for 10th with a score of 9.725, while Lutfey's 9.675 performance was good for 13th. Walters and Abdo earned matching 9.650 scores to tie for 14th, and Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, NY) turned in a 9.450 to finish in 20th.
The highlight of the day for the squad was their team performance and school record of 48.625 on the vault. Hoffman earned Brown's top score, taking 5th place with a 9.775, while Shnayder added to her list of solid performances, contributing a 9.750 to tie for 6th. Walters and Lutfey took 10th and 12th respectively, springing to scores of 9.725 and 9.700, while Katie Rogers (Bethesda, MD) tied for 15th with a 9.675. Rebecca Freedman (Plainview, NY) also contributed to the Bears' record-breaking performance, adding a 9.250 to take 23rd place.
The Scarlet Knights grabbed the team title in the competition with a final score of 195.00, while the Pittsburgh University Panthers earned 194.625 points to take the runner-up spot. The Bears were followed by the Southern Connecticut State Owls, as they rounded out the competition with a final tally of 188.525.
Brown will welcome the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, the Bridgeport Purple Knights, the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland and the Springfield College Pride to the Pizzitola Sports Center next weekend, as the team hosts their final home meet of the 2013 season on Sunday, February 10. Competition is set to begin at 1:00pm.
