Team Vault School Record Highlights Brown Gymnastics’ Second-Place Showing
DURHAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE – The Brown gymnastics team broke a school record with a combined score of 48.4 on the vault en route to a second-place finish with a point total of 191.75 in a three-team meet at the University of New Hampshire's Lundholm Gym on Saturday afternoon. UNH won the meet with a final team mark of 195.65, while Temple University was third at 190.225.
"The team showed its strength and determination tonight," said head coach Sara Carver-Milne, "fighting through a few mistakes and not letting them define the outcome. The highlight of the night was breaking the school record on vault. It was a true team effort in our first away meet that carried us to another solid team score."
Brown's best event of the day, according to Carver-Milne, was the beam, its first rotation of the night. The Bears combined for a 48.525, improving upon the 48.375 total that they posted a week ago.
Sophomore Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, NY) paced Brown's vault effort with a team-leading score of 9.775, which tied her career-high. She also finished with a 9.050 on the floor exercise to tie for 17th place.
The Bears were lead by Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) in the all-around competition, as the junior finished third in her first all-around of the season with a total score of 38.875. She also put forth an impressive beam performance, tying for fifth with a 9.775 before posting a 9.675 on vault to tie for seventh. Her score of 9.5 on floor placed her in 14th, while her 8.925 on bars was good for 16th.
Last week's ECAC Rookie of the Week Diana Walters (Austin, TX) placed fifth in the all-around, compiling a score of 36.550. The freshman turned in a strong performance on the vault, finishing sixth with a score of 9.7. To round her day of competition, she finished 17th on the bars with an 8.9, 16th on the floor with a solid score of 9.15 and 18th on the beam with a tally of 8.8.
The trio of junior Rebecca Freedman (Plainview, NY), senior Emily Lutfey (Los Angeles, CA) and junior Katie Rogers (Bethesda, MD) all posted marks of 9.625 to tie for 11th on the vault. Lutfey also notched a 9.575 (15th) to take 15th on the beam and a 9.65 to tie for eighth on the floor.
Senior Julia Meyer (Granite City, IL) led Brown's effort on the bars with a sixth place finish at 9.675. She and senior Nicole Abdo (Largo, FL) both registered scores of 9.75 to tie for seventh place on the beam, a highlight of the competition for the Bears. Abdo also posted a score of 9.575 on the floor to tie for 12th.
Freshman Corey Holman (Westford, MA) had two very strong performances, scoring a 9.675 on the beam for 13th place and a 9.625 on the floor to take the 11th spot. Rounding out a strong team showing for Brown, seniors Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC) and Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA) (9.525) finished ninth and tenth on the bars with scores of 9.575 and 9.525 respectively.
The Bears travel to Rutgers to face the Scarlet Knights along with Pittsburgh and Southern Connecticut in their next competition at 6pm on Saturday, February 2.
