    Brown Athletics Announces 2013 Award Winners at Fifth Annual Senior Luncheon The Fifth Annual Brown Athletics Senior Celebration and Awards Luncheon was held at Andrews Dining Hall on Monday, May 20, 2013. Over 275 student-athletes, coaches, staff and distinguished guests were in attendance at the banquet to celebrate another year of success in competition, in the classroom and in the community. President Christina Paxson and Director of Athletics Jack Hayes each took the opportunity to address the room and acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of the class of 2013.

    Three Brown Student-Athletes Named to Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District I At Large Team Three Brown student-athletes - two seniors and one junior - have been selected to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large team. On the men’s side, senior men’s lacrosse player Clay Del Prince (Hamburg, NY) and senior fencer Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) earned First Team honors, while junior gymnast Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) was a First Team honoree on the Women’s At-Large team. All three will now advance to the Academic All-America national ballot.

    Brown Gymnastics Celebrates 2013 Season at Team Banquet The Brown gymnastics team celebrated its 2013 season on Monday, May 6th with its annual awards banquet, held this year at Fleming’s Steakhouse in Providence. Head coach Sara Carver-Milne honored seven gymnasts with team awards over the course of the evening, and the Bears also took the time to recognize the accomplishments of the team, including the first Ivy Classic team title in 23 years and the first-ever team selection to the USAG Collegiate Nationals. Additionally, they honored the dedication and contributions of the Brown gymnastics class of 2013: Nicole Abdo (Largo, FL), Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC), Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA), Emily Lutfey (Los Angeles, CA) and Julia Meyer (Granite City, IL).

    Brown Gymnastics to Represent Walking for Wendy in Rhode Island PurpleStride Walk On Sunday, May 5th the Brown gymnastics team will participate in the 2013 Rhode Island PurpleStride walk to raise money and awareness for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The family-friendly, 1.5-mile walk will take place in Goddard Memorial Park in Warwick, Rhode Island, and this is the second year that the Bears have united to support the cause and honor the memory of those who have battled the disease.

    Brown Gymnast Michelle Shnayder Named an RIAIAW Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year Each year, the RIAIAW (Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) names one Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year from each of the state’s nine schools. The accolade is based upon athletic excellence, academic success and leadership qualities, and this year’s recipients, including Brown gymnast Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) were honored on Wednesday, May 1st at a reception held in Brown University’s Joukowsky Room.

    Former Brown Gymnast Alicia Sacramone to be Inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame As USA Gymnastics celebrates its 50th anniversary, former Brown gymnast Alicia Sacramone will also have something to celebrate – her induction into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2013. The 2013 US Championships and the USA Gymnastics Congress and Trade Show, held from August 15th to 18th at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, will showcase the country’s best gymnastics and serve as the backdrop for the two momentous celebrations.

The only time the Bears scored higher this season is when they won the Ivy Classic with a score of 193.925.

The Bears’ score of 190.825 earns them a berth in the Team Finals tomorrow night at 7:00pm where they will compete for the USAG National title.

    Kasey Haas Named ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year; 14 Brown Gymnasts Receive ECAC All-Academic Honors The ECAC All-Academic awards were announced at the conclusion of the 2013 ECAC Gymnastics Championships, and senior Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC) was named ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, marking the third consecutive time that the honor has gone to a gymnast from Brown. Additionally, the team placed 14 student-athletes on the list of honorees, as each was granted with an All-Academic award.

    Brown Set to Take on the ECAC at the 2013 Gymnastics Championships The Brown gymnastics team heads to Ithaca, New York this weekend, as the Cornell Big Red host the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships on Saturday, March 23rd. The six-team meet, held at Newman Arena, begins at 12:00 pm. The Bears begin the meet on bars, have a bye, then move to beam, have a bye, perform on floor and then have their final rotation on vault. After a season filled with highlights, including the team’s first Ivy Classic title since 1990, Brown looks to bring a second league championship home to College Hill.

Junior Michelle Shnayder’s (Lincolnshire, IL) fourth place finish in the all-around competition with a score of 38.550 highlighted the competition for the Bears, as she earned second team All-ECAC honors for her performance.

Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University this afternoon. The Maryland Terps led the competition, turning in a team score of 196.150. The Colonials claimed the second spot with a total of 195.325, the Towson Tigers were third with 194.025 and the Brown Bears finished fourth with 191.550.

    Brown Breaks Another School Record in Final Home Meet of the Season The Brown gymnastics team competed in its final home meet of the season this afternoon, welcoming the Bridgeport Purple Knights, the Yale Bulldogs and the URI club team to the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears turned in solid performances in the midst of a busy week of competition, finishing third with a score of 191.625. The Purple Knights took the top spot with a 196.200, followed by the Bulldogs with a score of 193.475. The team from URI finished fourth with 162.575.

    Brown Wins Second Meet of the Season as Several Gymnasts Turn in Impressive Routines The Brown gymnastics team continued its series of impressive performances this weekend in a meet at Southern Connecticut State with Cornell and West Chester, winning the overall team title with 192.000 points, the team’s second highest point total of the season. The Bears were followed by the Big Red with 191.675 points, the Owls with 191.025 points and the Golden Rams with 186.425 points.

The Cal Bears led the competition, turning in a team score of 195.925. San Jose State claimed the second spot with a total of 195.000, and the Brown Bears finished in third with 189.350. Junior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) was Brown’s only competitor in the all-around, finishing fourth with a score of 38.325.

The Bears broke their school record on the vault for a second consecutive weekend, registering a team score of 48.625 on the apparatus, while freshman Diana Walters (Austin, TX) and junior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) earned the top two spots in the all-around competition. Walters compiled a personal-best score of 38.475 over the course of four events, while Shnayder was right behind her with a 38.175.

UNH won the meet with a final team mark of 195.65, while Temple University was third at 190.225.

The Bears finished in second place with a team score of 192.225, just .025 below their season-high during the 2012 campaign. Four-time defending USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Team Champions, Bridgeport, earned the top spot with a 194.600, while the URI club team finished third (168.575) and Rhode Island College placed fourth (166.550).

    Brown Gymnastics Earns Fifth-Best GPA in the Country Providence, RI- Brown gymnasts Katie Goddard '12 (Public Policy & American Institutions), Rebecca Freedman '14 (Science & Society), Kasey Haas '13 (Political Science) and Katie Rogers '14 (Business, Entrepreneurship & Organizations) boasted a perfect 4.00 grade point average to lead a group of 10 Bears that received Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) for the 2011-12 season. As a team, Brown posted its best ranking ever, earning fifth in the nation with a team GPA of 3.6414.
