Brown Gymnastics Finishes Third at Ivy Classic

Philadelphia, PA- The Brown University gymnastics team finished third at the 2011 Ivy Classic hosted at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon. The Quakers captured the championship with a total of 191.950 points, followed by Cornell (190.550) in second, the Bears in third (188.900) and Yale (185.550) in fourth.

The Bears combined for a 46.700 on the vault, and was led by sophomore Katie Goddard's (Kings Park, NY) 9.525 for seventh place. Senior Chelsey Binkley (Marietta, GA) finished ninth with a 9.475 and was followed by freshman Michelle Shnayder (9.400) in 12th, Emily Lutfey (9.225) in 16th and freshman Rebecca Freedman (9.075) in 19th. Rounding out the scoring was junior Carli Wiesenfeld (Atlanta, GA) with an 8.925 in 21st.

Binkley was Brown's top finisher on the bars with a 9.600 for sixth, as the team combined for a 46.900. Brown's Wiesenfeld, sophomore Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA) then locked up 11th through 13th places, respectively. Wiesenfeld scored a 9.475, Haas followed with a 9.375 and Hall posted a 9.325. Next, Lutfey earned 19th with a 9.125 and sophomore Julia Meyer (Granite City, IL) earned an 8.950 for 21st.

On the beam, Lutfey captured third place with a solid score of 9.750, and senior Victoria Zanelli (Katy, TX) was Brown's next finisher with a 13th place performance of 9.400. Shnayder followed right behind with a 9.275 for 14th, and Wiesenfeld finished in 17th with a 9.150. Rounding out the scoring was Meyer (9.075) and Haas (8.700) as the squad totaled a 46.650 on the event.

Brown's best event of the day was the floor exercise, as Shnayder captured second place with a 9.825 and Wiesenfeld finished right behind in third with a 9.800. Katie Goddard came in sixth place with a 9.725 and Haas and Lutfey tied for 12th with a 9.650. Freshman Taline Lahcanski (Rochester, NY) earned 16th with a 9.575 as the Bears combined for a 48.650 overall.

Lutfey and Wiesenfeld competed all-around for the Bears, and finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Lutfey posted a 37.750 and Wiesenfeld combined for a 37.350.

The Bears will now host Southern Connecticut and Bridgeport at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday, March 6, at 1 p.m.
