Ten Brown Fencers Named All-NFC

Providence, RI - Ten members of the Brown fencing team have been named All-Northeast Fencing Conference for the 2007-08 season. The Bears had seven First Team and three Second Team honorees among the 36 recipients. The 10 honorees was most in the conference, with MIT next with six, followed by Sacred Heart with five and Vassar with four.

Leading the way were three members of the men's foil squad, sophomore Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ), freshman Scott Phillips (Great Neck, NY), and freshman Jonathan Yu (Birmingham, AL), who were all named First Team. Joining them on the First Team were sophomore Adam Yarnell (Harrison, NY) in men's epée, sophomore Randy Alevi (Old Westbury, NY) in women's sabre, freshman Francesca Bartholomew (Boston, MA) in women's foil, and senior Christine Livoti (Garden City, NY) in women's epée.

Earning second team honors were sophomore David Pagliaccio (Dobbs Ferry, NY) in men's epée, junior Deborah Gorth (Amherst, MA), and junior Robyn Thvedt (Tucson, AZ) in women's epée.

After the third and final NFC meet on Feb. 9, the Bears also learned where they finished in the final standings. The women had already clinched the conference championship with a perfect 12-0 record. With a 6-4 mark, the Brown men finished tied with MIT for fourth, behind Vassar (8-2), Boston College (9-1), and champion #9 Brandeis (10-0).
