Brown Fencing Takes Seven of Nine, Women Go Undefeated at First League Meet

Durham, NH - The Brown Fencing team opened its regular season with a 5-0 performance by the women's squad and a 2-2 record for the men's squad in Northeast Fencing Conference competition held at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, November 20. The Brown women rolled over Boston University, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Tufts, and Wellesley. The men dropped hard-fought meets to Tufts and Massachusetts but were able to defeat Boston University and New Hampshire.

Leading the women during the day were All-American and Tri-Captain Ruth Schneider '06 and Christine Livoti '08 (with 12-1 and 13-2 respective records in women's epee), sophomore foilist Jennifer Hausmann (13-2 record), and sabrist Charlotte Gartenberg '08 (9-6 record). Hausmann was instrumental in helping the Brown women end the day undefeated. Stepping onto the strip against her opponent from Tufts with the team score tied 13-13, Hausmann came away with a 5-4 victory for her squad and a perfect record for Bruno.

Among the Brown men, sophomore and NCAA qualifier Jeremy Zeitlin had a perfect 6-0 individual record. Epeeist Adrian Martin '06 boasted a 9-1 record while foilist and Tri-Captain John Wurzel '05 and saberists Sam Levine '08 and Dan Mahoney '07 all finished the meet with 9-3 performances. Zeitlin and Wurzel led the men's foil squad to a 9-0 victory over New Hampshire, a highlight of the day.

Next up for the team is a December 5 trip to Brandeis for meets against tough regional rivals Boston College, Brandeis, and MIT.
