Cambridge, MA - The Brown varsity fencing team traveled to its first League Meet of the season at MIT on Saturday, Nov. 16. Both the men's and the women's teams competed against Boston University, UMass, Brandeis, New Hampshire, and MIT. The women also faced Wellesley College. The men went 3-2 on the day, beating Boston University, UMass, and New Hampshire, while the women went 4-2, beating Boston University, Wellesley, Brandeis, and New Hampshire.
The women's epee and men's saber squads posted the best performances for the Bears at the event. Both squads were undefeated on the day and swept two opponents. The women's epee squad, led by nationally-ranked freshman Ruth Schneider, posted a perfect 9-0 mark against New Hampshire. Senior All-American Paul Friedman paced the men's saber squad to a 9-0 score against UMass.
Sophomore Shauna Edson won all four of her bouts in women's epee. She fenced the last bout against New Hampshire, came from behind to force her match into sudden-death overtime, and then defeated her opponent with time running out to secure the epee squad's sweep. Senior Jamie Martin-McNaughton won the last foil bout against regional rival Brandeis, breaking a 13-13 tie and giving Brown the team victory.
The men's foil squad won two of its five meets, a great accomplishment for a team comprised entirely of novice fencers. The meet was the first collegiate competition for walk-on freshmen Brian Christian, Jimmy Dorroh, Jeremy Moore, and Jonathan Liu.
In women's foil, freshmen Nannette Milner and Juliane Kellner also competed in their first varsity meet and showed signs of great potential for the coming season. In similar fashion, freshman Xian Leong put the league on notice in women's saber.
The Bears continue action on Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Brandeis Invitational. On the schedule are re-matches with MIT and Brandeis, and a meeting with perennial powerhouse St. John's University, runner-up in last year's NCAA Team Championships.
