Brown Fencers Place Eight Top Ten Finishers At "The Big One"

Northampton, MA - In the first meet of the 2002-03 season, the Brown fencing team showed signs of great potential for the coming season at the annual preseason individual "Big One" meet at Smith College on Saturday Nov. 2. The Bears had two first place finishers and eight top ten finishers.

Senior Paul Friedman took first place in men's saber, while sophomore Dan Dorsky came in third out of 46 competitors.

In men's foil, sophomore John Wurzel came in 29th and junior Ven Tadipatri came in 40th out of 45 competitors.

Freshman Adrian Martin took sixth in the men's epee while junior Brian Williams came in 17th and sophomore Mike Krawcyznski came in 26th out of 44 competitors.

Junior Laura Brion came in fourth in women's saber and senior Carmen Blackwell took tenth place.

Competing in the panache for the first time were freshmen Lacey Gray, who took 22nd place, and Peiling Li, who took 31st place out of the 48 competitors.

The women's epee squad had a strong showing, placing three competitors in the top ten. Freshman Ruth Schneider was the top finisher of the day while follow freshman Lucy Walker took eigth place. Also placing in the top ten was senior Sophie Klein, who took ninth place. Junior Ally Assante placed 17th as well. After the first round of pools, Schneider, Walker and Klein were undefeated.

Brown's next meet will take place on Saturday Nov. 16 at MIT for the first of two league meets this season.
