Columbus, OH - On the final day of competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships, Brown sophomores Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ) and Adam Yarnell (Harrison, NY) combined for seven wins, bringing the Bears' team total to 27, good for a 20th place finish. Pantel placed 17th in men's foil with nine victories, while Yarnell was 20th in men's epée with eight wins.
Pantel finished with a 9-15 record, but with an indicator (difference between touches scored and received) of +2. That was better than five of the fencers who finished ahead of him. That was due largely to three of his wins on Sunday, two of which were 5-0 and one by a 5-1 score. Yarnell placed 20th based on an 8-16 mark, with an indicator of -18.
Earlier in the week, sophomore Randy Alevi (Old Westbury, NY) finished 14th in women's saber with a 10-14 record and -16 indicator.
Host Ohio State won the team championship with 185 victories, pulling away from Notre Dame, the second-place finisher with 176. Complete results can be found at http://www.prisedefer.com/ncaa2008.html.
