Cambridge, MA - All-American Ruth Schneider '06 qualified for the 2006 NCAA National Fencing Championship by capturing 5th place in the women's epee event at the NCAA Regional Championships held this past Sunday at Harvard University. This will be Schneider's third time representing Brown at Nationals. She placed 12th at Nationals in 2003 and took 5th at the event in 2004.
In women's saber, Olivia Partyka `07 finished in 9th place, one spot out of automatic qualification for the National tournament. Based on the strength of her season record, Partyka remains eligible for an at-large bid to Nationals. The NCAA will announce at-large bids later this week.
For the first time in history, every single starter on Brown's fencing team qualified for this year's Regional championships.
Christine Livoti '08 and Christina Salvatore '09 also fenced well in women's epee. Livoti made it to the round of 16, where she lost to eventual Regional silver medalist Jasmine McGlade of Harvard. Livoti finished the event in 13th place. Salvatore was ranked 15th.
Charlotte Gartenberg '08 was another top finisher for the Bears, placing 15th in women's saber.
Unfortunately, the Brown men did not qualify any fencers to this year's Nationals. In saber, Dan Mahoney '07 finished in 19th after losing to Jacob Hadjigeorgis of NYU 15-14. Had he won that bout, Mahoney would have entered the round of 16 and had a good chance to qualify for Nationals. Mahoney finished 19th, while Sam Levine '08 placed 22nd and Jeremy Adler '06 placed 30th.
In men's foil, Nick Bender '09 placed 12th and Jeremy Zeitlin '07 placed 16th. Zeitlin beat Sean Hickey of Boston College to make the round of 16, where he lost to eventual Regional gold medalist Kai Itameri-Kinter of Harvard.
Nick Bender lost to Gabe Sinkin of NYU, but beat NYU's Dmitri Apostol to finish in the top 12. In epee, David Berliner lost to Trevor Chang of MIT to finish 27th, while Adrian Martin '06 lost 15-13 to the fifth-seed Lorenzo Casertano of Columbia to finish 26th.
The Regional Championship Tournament was the last tournament for a number of seniors, including Jeremy Moore, Adrian Martin, Nanette Milner, and Jeremy Adler. Ruth Schneider will fence one more time for Brown at the NCAA National Championships, held March 16-19 at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
