Fencing Wins 3 Meets Against Stiff Competition at MIT

Feb. 6, 2003

Boston, MA - The Brown fencing team traveled to MIT on February 2 to face collegiate fencing powers Pennsylvania, New York University, Duke, and North Carolina. The men's team also fenced Yeshiva while the women also squared off against Cornell. The women's team defeated Cornell and Carolina to finish 2-3 on the day while the men were only able to overcome Yeshiva and came away with a 1-4 record at the meet. Cornell does not field a men's squad while Yeshiva does not have a women's team.

Although overall team results were not as strong as expected, two of Brown's weapons squads continued to display overwhelming dominance. Anchored by Senior All-American Paul Friedman, the men's saber squad posted a perfect 5-0 record on the day, including a 9-0 victory over Yeshiva and an 8-1 thrashing of Pennsylvania. Sophomore Dan Dorsky and freshman Jeremy Adler also made outstanding contributions to the saber squads' sweep of the competition.

The Brown women's epee team ended the day 3-2, with solid 6-3 victories against Cornell and NYU and a 9-0 sweep of Carolina, to which all five members of the squad contributed.

The last round against Carolina was full of excitement. Women's foilist senior Jamie Martin-McNaughton was in her last bout and had tied the score, gone into overtime and lost priority. Then she pulled a beautiful fleche to win the bout 4-3 with less than one second remaining. In men's epee, tri-captain junior Brian Williams went into overtime with a score of 1-1 and then made a picture-perfect flick to the arm and won the bout 2-1. It was a high note to end the day on.

At this point in the fencing season, Brown's men's saber and women's epee squads enter the final stretch as two of the best weapons squads in the country. The entire team will look to build on this momentum on February 8 in an important meet against the Columbia Lions. After Columbia, Coach Atilio Tass and the Bears will focus on making a strong showing at the New England, ECAC and NCAA Championships.
