Fencing’s Masood, Koch Earn All-Ivy at Ivy League Round-Robins

PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Umar Masood and senior Samuel Koch both earned First Team All-Ivy to pace Brown University fencing on the second and final day of the 2018 Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins at Princeton University's Jadwin Gymnasium on Sunday.

Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) tallied an 8-4 record to tie for second in men's foil with a 66.7 winning percentage. He gained All-Ivy for the second time after taking home Second Team All-Ivy in 2017.

Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) also posted an 8-4 record, placing third in men's epee. He garnered All-Ivy for the third time after claiming Second Team All-Ivy in both 2015 and 2016. Koch became the first fencer in program history to earn All-Ivy three times.

In each weapon, finishers one through three earn First Team All-Ivy while places four through six garner Second Team All-Ivy.

As a team on day two, the Bears' men's team fell to No. 6 Princeton (22-5) and No. 7 Penn (23-4) while the women's side dropped decisions to Cornell (14-13), No. 5 Princeton (23-4), and No. 8 Penn (21-6).

At the squad level, women's epee topped Cornell, 7-2, and women's sabre beat the Big Red, 5-4. Women's epee tested Penn in a 5-4 setback.

In the team standings, Columbia, Harvard, and Penn all finished 4-1 to tie for the top spot on the men's side while Columbia posted a 6-0 mark to claim the top spot in the women's rankings.

Freshman Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) collected seven wins in women's sabre while senior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) notched five wins in women's foil. In women's epee, freshmen Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) and Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.) each compiled five wins. Freshman Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) registered five wins in men's sabre.

Next, Brown will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., on Mar. 11.
