NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Umar Masood placed fourth in men's foil to lead Brown University fencing at the 2017 NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday at Yale University's Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
A Second Team All-Ivy honoree, Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) came in fourth out of 33 competitors in men's foil, finishing with a 14-8 overall record. He went 4-2 in both the first and second rounds before registering a 6-4 mark in the third round.
Three other Bears earned top-20 finishes in their respective weapons as junior Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) came in 14th in women's epee, junior Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) placed 14th in men's epee, and junior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) finished in 18th in women's foil.
Ferguson earned 14th out of a field of 45 entrants with a 5-6 record while Koch came in 14th out of 37 competitors with a 5-7 mark. Allen finished 18th out of a field of 36 behind a 4-8 record.
In men's epee, junior Ryan Connor (Lincoln, R.I.) came in 22nd with a 3-3 record while senior James Yoon (Austin, Texas) tied for 28th, and sophomore Julius Reiner (Chicago, Ill.) placed 32nd out of 37 competitors.
In women's epee, freshman Sophie Ulene (Scarsdale, N.Y.) came in 29th place with a 5-5 overall record out of 45 entrants while in women's foil, sophomore Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) placed 28th out of 36 competitors.
Next, Brown will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships from Mar. 23-26 in Fishers, Ind. The NCAA will announce selections on Mar. 14.
