Fencing Dominates at NFC #2, Goes Combined 11-2
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Brown fencing teams stand alone at the 20-win plateau on the strength of a combined 11-2 showing at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet #2 hosted by Boston College on Saturday. The men's squad went 5-1 while the women posted a 6-1 record.
The men defeated all but one of their opponents by large margins, taking down Tufts 24-3, Boston College 20-7, Brandeis 18-9, Dartmouth 19-8, and Vassar 22-5, before falling to a strong MIT men's team 15-12. The women lost a close match to Tufts 14-13, but conquered Boston College 15-12, Brandeis 16-11, Dartmouth 17-10, Smith 23-4, Vassar 21-6, and MIT 24-3.
Senior Laney Caldwell (Indian Springs, AL) had a standout performance for the women's epee squad, going 14-3 on the day, while sophomore Simon Jones (Louisville, CO) led the men's side with a 17-1 score. Rookie James Yoon (Austin, TX) also had a strong showing for the epeeists with an 11-6 record.
Women's foil saw a number of victories from sophomore Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, NJ), who went 16-1, and senior captain Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, RI), who tallied a 15-2 score. A number of men's foilists had impressive showings as well. Junior captain Barrett Weiss (Barrington, RI) lost only one bout for a 12-1 record, while sophomore Kyle Kennedy (Wall, NJ) went 10-3 and senior Josh Grill (Pittsburgh, PA) went 11-4.
The women's saber squad had a stellar day overall, dropping only nine bouts among the entire team. Senior Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, CA) emerged undefeated, posting a spectacular 20-0 mark. Sophomore Lauren Altman (New York, NY) and junior Christie Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, CA) followed, going 12-3 and 11-4, respectively. Senior Nick Deak (San Diego, CA) led the men's side, scoring a 14-2 record. Sophomore Denis Dukhvalov (Salisbury Mills, NY) followed with a 12-5 mark, and freshman Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, CA) had an 11-6 record for the day.
The Bears will be in action again next weekend at the Eric Sollee Invitational at Brandeis on Saturday, February 1.
