Jones Finishes in 18th in Men’s Epee, Brown Places 15th at Fencing NCAA Championships
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brown fencing sophomore Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) finished in 18th place in the men’s epee field to wrap up the Brown fencing team’s showing at the NCAA Fencing Championships at French Fieldhouse on Sunday. The Bears finished in 15th place overall in the field of 25 teams.

Women’s Fencers Wrap Up NCAA Championships Stint
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brown women’s fencing seniors Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) concluded their stint at the NCAA Fencing Championships on Friday, helping Brown earn a 13th-place team finish after two days of action.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three of Brown’s four fencers who qualified for the 2014 NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships competed at French Fieldhouse on Thursday in the first three rounds of women’s sabre, epee and foil. In sabre, senior Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) sits in 11th place and classmate Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, Calif.) stands in 16th, while senior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) is in 21st in women’s epee.

Fencing Quartet Poised for NCAA Championships on Thursday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Brown fencing team will be represented by four student-athletes at the 2014 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships at French Fieldhouse this weekend: seniors Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) in women’s sabre, senior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) in women’s foil and sophomore Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) in men’s épée. The four-day round-robin event begins on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with women’s foil and runs through Sunday, concluding with the men’s championship bouts.

Taylor Earns Second Team All-Ivy, Fencing Completes Ivy Round-Robin
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, Calif.) finished 12-6 overall in women’s saber to earn a spot on the All-Ivy League Second Team and lead the Brown fencing team at the Ivy League Round-Robin at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center on Sunday. The men’s side placed fifth and went 1-4 overall, while the women finished sixth with a 1-5 showing.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Brown fencing teams stand alone at the 20-win plateau on the strength of a combined 11-2 showing at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet #2 hosted by Boston College on Saturday. The men’s squad went 5-1 while the women posted a 6-1 record.

Fencing Maintains Unbeaten Streak with Spotless Showing at Brandeis Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. - Senior captain Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, RI), senior Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, CA) and rookie Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, CA) posted strong performances across all squads to help the Bears go undefeated for the second meet in a row at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. Both the men’s and women’s teams went 3-0.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following back-to-back first place finishes at the Big One and Northeast Fencing Conference #1, the Brown fencing team will close out the 2013 calendar year at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass., on Sunday. The Bears are slated to begin competition at 12 p.m. against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fencing Goes Unbeaten at NFC Opener
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior captain Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) went undefeated in women’s foil and men’s saber, respectively, to help the Brown fencing team go unbeaten at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet on the season on Saturday at the Olney-Margolies Athletics Center. The women’s side swept the competition, 5-0, while the men finished 4-0.

Fencing Repeats at Big One Champs in Season Opener
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Senior captain Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) took the gold medal in the women’s foil for the third time in her career to lift the Brown fencing team to a repeat first-place finish at the season-opening Big One at Smith College on Saturday, which featured over 20 colleges from throughout the region. The Bears were the champions of the day, taking away 13 medals. This narrowly eclipsed Brandeis, which won 12 medals, and the third- and fourth-place finishers, Sacred Heart and MIT, which won six and five medals, respectively. Brown scored two gold medals, two silver, three bronze, and six other medals for fourth- through eighth-place finishes.

Fencing Ready to Open 2013-14 Season at Saturday’s Big One
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Inspired by strong representation at last year’s NCAA Fencing Championships as well as the Northeast Regionals and Ivy League Round Robin Tournament, the Brown fencing team will stand en garde for the first time this season at Saturday’s the Big One, the annual season-opening individual meet held by Smith College. The Bears will head to Northampton, Mass., in hopes of starting the year as strong as 2012, which saw Brown take home 11 medals and finish in first place overall at the kick-off event.
