NEW YORK, NEW YORK – After an impressive performance at the 2013 Ivy League Championships, the Brown fencing team carried its momentum into this weekend's competition, putting together another exciting performance at the NCAA Northeast Regionals at St. John's University in New York.
Senior Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) was the all-star of the event for the Bears, finishing third in the tournament in the men's epee with an impressive record of 16-7. Rookie Simon Jones (Louisville, CO) was right behind in the tenth spot. Junior Laney Caldwell (Indian Springs, AL) led the women's epee, taking 14th place with an 11-5 record. Senior Corey Abbe (Scappoose, OR) also fought hard, battling to a 7-9 record that earned her the 19th spot.
The city of Barrington, Rhode Island was strongly represented in the foil matches for Bruno, as junior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, RI) placed 11th in the women's event with a 10-13 record and sophomore Barrett Weiss (Barrington, RI) placed 17th in the men's competition with a record of 5-7. Senior Avery Nackman (Katonah, NY) supported Hawrot's efforts, scoring 6-6 and placing 15th out of 45 competitors.
Lastly, in the men's saber, senior Teddy Weller (Barrington, RI) finished eighth out of 34, with a record of 13-10. Junior Nick Deak (San Diego, CA) finished with a record of 8-15 and finished to take the 12th spot. Sophomore Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, CA) won 12 rounds and lost 11 placing her in the top 10 of the women's saber competition.
The Bears will now wait for the final list of qualifiers for the NCAA Fencing Championships to be held from March 21st to 24th in San Antonio, Texas.
