Women Take Fourth and Men Finish Sixth in Ivy League Fencing Round Robin Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS – On the second day of the 2013 Ivy League Round Robin Tournament, the men lost two tough matches against Penn and Yale, putting them in sixth place at the tournament. The women won two games against Penn and Yale but lost to Harvard, maintaining their fourth place position from yesterday.

In the men's foil, sophomore Barrett Weiss (Barrington, RI) was once again the star of the squad, leading with an 5-4 record. He'll finish the weekend with an overall record of 8-7. As for the women, junior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, RI) finished with a record of 13-5, which placed her in a tie for the fifth best record of the weekend. Because of her top-ranked finish, she was named to the second team All-Ivy.  

Senior Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) competed in tough bouts in the men's epee to finish the weekend with a 7-8 record, the 11th best record out of the tournament. Rookie Simon Jones (Louisville, CO) battled in his first Ivy League Championships earning a final record of 3-10. Junior Laney Caldwell (Indian Springs, AL) fought hard today, and had Brown's best women's epee record of 8-10. Senior Corey Abbe (Scappoose, OR) was right behind her with a 7-11 record.

In the men's saber, junior Nick Deak (San Diego, CA) had a phenomenal day, finishing with an 11-4 record, the third best in the competition. His efforts earned him a spot on the first team All-Ivy for the tournament. Sophomore Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, CA) barely missed the cut for second team All-Ivy with the seventh best record of the day, coming in at 11-7. Rookie Lauren Altman (New City, NY) also stepped up her game today, winning seven matches to tie for the ninth best record with a 9-9 mark overall.
The Brown fencing squad will return to action next Sunday, March 10 when it competes at the Regional Championships at St. John's University.
