Brown Puts Forth A Dominant Performance at NFC #2

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND - At the second Northeast Fencing Conference competition the Brown fencing program put up large victories, with the women's team once again going undefeated on the day. The men's team has had only one close loss to Sacred Heart over the two competitions, dropping the match 14-13. The women won the NFC with today's performance, while the men are still waiting for the other teams to finish their bouts to hear back on their results.

The women handily won in 11 of their 12 bouts, beating U Mass and UNH 24-3, Smith and Wellesley 23-4, BU, Brandeis, Vassar and Tufts 22-5, Dartmouth and MIT 19-8, Boston College 17-10, before squeaking out a victory over Sacred Heart 14-13.

Despite their tough loss to Sacred Heart, the men prevailed over the other nine teams in the conference by large margins with scores such as 26-1 over Vassar and UNH, 24-3 over BU, 21-6 over Boston College, Dartmouth, and Tufts, 20-7 over U Mass, and 19-8 over MIT and Brandeis.

In today's set of events held at Brown, rookie Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, NJ) had another impressive day with a record of 17-1 for the women's foil team. Junior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, RI) went undefeated for the day, beating all of her competition for an outstanding record of 18-0. In the men's foil, senior James Golin (Newton, MA) and sophomore Barrett Weiss (Barrington, RI) put up strong performances to help Bruno beat Vassar, Tufts, Dartmouth and MIT by wide margins, including 9-0 victories against Vassar and Tufts.

The women's epee team featured more big performances from senior captain Cory Abbe (Scappoose, OR) who went 13-2 on the day and junior Laney Caldwell (Indian Springs, AL) who compiled a record of 10-5. The women's epee squad went undefeated against Tufts and Smith. On the men's side, freshman Simon Jones (Louisville, CO) and senior Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) lead the team to 8-1 victories over Vassar, Dartmouth, and Brandeis.

Sophomore Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, CA) led the women's saber squad, beating her opponents 15-1, and rookie Lauren Altman (New City, NY) also stepped up with a 16-3 record to help Brown go undefeated against Dartmouth. Senior Teddy Weller (Barrington, RI) and junior Nick Deak (San Diego, CA) led the men's saber team to victory.

The win for the women and the strong performance of the men are perfect stepping stones for the Eric Sollee Invitational at MIT on Sunday, February 3.
