Women’s Foil Leads the Way for Brown at Inaugural USCFS Championships

New York, N.Y. – The Brown women's foil team was crowned as champions at the inaugural United States Collegiate Fencing Squad (USCFS) Championships, which were hosted by New York University on Sunday, February 27, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The University of Notre Dame women's sabre team and the Columbia University women's epee team also claimed victories.

"This was a fantastic result for our program," remarked head coach Atilio Tass. "Our entire team competed strongly against a very high level field of competition."

The Championships featured the USFA relay-scoring structure rather than the typical protocol of NCAA fencing competitions.

The foil team of Kathryn Hawrot, Yukiko Kunitomo and Avery Nackman led the Bears to a 45-40 win over Penn in the finals.

In the women's eppe, the team of Cory Abbe, Laney Caldwell and Kathy Nguyen fought to a tie for third place.

The men's sabre squad of Teddy Weller, Peter Tyson and Nicholas Deak also added a third-place finish.

The men's foil and epee finished in sixth and eighth, respectively.
