Hawrot Earns First-Team All Ivy Honors at Fencing Championships

Princeton, N.J. – The Brown men's & women's fencing teams competed this weekend at the Ivy League Championships and it was rookie Kathryn Hawrot who stole the show, earning First-Team All Ivy honors. The men's team placed fifth while the women finished sixth overall. Harvard took first overall on the men's side, while Princeton placed first for the women.
The Brown men (1-4) picked up its team win against Columbia, winning 15-12. The women (1-5) were victorious over Yale, 15-12. The Brown women were also narrowly edged by Penn, 16-11.
Hawrot was nearly unstoppable in the women's foil, finishing third in the event with an 11-4 mark. Her .733 win percentage earned her All-Ivy honors, an exceptional performance for a freshman fencer.
Several other individual fencers had impressive performances at the Conference Championship. In the men's saber, Teddy Weller tied for eighth with an 8-7 record. Peter Tyson finished in 11th at 7-7. On the women's side, Cory Abbe finished seventh overall in the women's epee with a 10-7 record. Laney Caldwell also placed in the women's epee with a 7-7 mark, good for 13th overall.
The Brown fencing team will be back in action on Feb. 27 at New York University for the National Squad Championships.
