Brown Fencing Takes Win At Big One Invitational

Northhampton, Mass. – In the first event of the year at Smith College, Brown fencing finished the day with 10 medals to take a first overall finish, two ahead of second-place MIT. The Bears got a first, two second and three third overall finishes to take the win.

"We have had a fantastic weekend, the big one is a season opening tournament which gave us the opportunity to see the state of the team," said head coach Atilio Tass. "The main goal for this weekend was to focus on practicing the correct technical and tactical elements for each team member."

Kathryn Hawrot led all Bears with a first place finish in the women's foil. She topped 81 other competitors. Brown also took the silver medal in the women's foil as Avery Nackman came in second. Brown's other second-place finish came in the women's epee thanks an impressive performance from Cory Abbe. The Bears got one more medal from the women's side when Caitlin Taylor tied for third in the sabre.

Scott Phillips and Ben McDonald led the way on the men's side as they finished in a tie for third in the foil and epee, respectively.
