Providence, R.I. – The fencing squads completed Ivy League competition this weekend at the University of Pennsylvania. The men defeated Yale, 15-12, to finish 2-3 in Ivy League play. The men’s team was defeated by Harvard, 20-7, and Penn, 16-11. The women lost close decisions to Penn, 19-8, and Yale, 17-10, and fell to Harvard, 24-3. Senior Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ) was named First Team All-Ivy in the foil event for the second year in a row. Pantel compiled a 10-4 mark in Ivy competition.
In the foil against Harvard, juniors Scott Phillips (Great Neck, NY) and Jonathan Yu (Birmingham, AL) each finished 2-1.
Against Penn, freshman Teddy Weller (Princeton, NJ) led the Bears with a 2-1 finish in the saber. Pantel compiled a 3-0 mark in the foil. On the women’s side, freshman Avery Nackman (Cross River, NY) and senior Bridget Smith (North Haven, CT) each turned in a 2-1 finish in their respective events.
In their defeat over Yale, the men had strong finishes from numerous athletes. Senior Steve Ellis (Bethesda, MD), Weller and sophomore Peter Tyson (Stony Brook, NY) all compiled a 2-1 mark in the saber. Pantel contributed a 2-1 mark in the foil, while freshman Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) and senior David Pagliaccio (Dobbs Ferry, NY) turned in 2-1 finishes in the epee.
On the women’s side, freshman Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, CA) finished 2-1 against Yale in the saber. Nackman and sophomores Vivian Truong (Brooklyn, NY) and Yukiko Kunitomo (Wellesley, MA) each contributed a 2-1 finish as well in the foil event.
Brown will be hosting the NCAA Fencing Regional on March 14 at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center (OMAC). More information will be available once the qualifiers are announced.
