Providence, R.I. – The fencing squads dominated the
competition at the first Northeast Fencing Conference event of the
season, as the Brown women compiled a 5-0 record on the day. The
men’s team finished 3-1, losing their only match by one
point. The event was hosted at Brown on Saturday, November
The women’s team defeated Boston University 25-2 and the University of New Hampshire 23-4. Against Sacred Heart University and Wellesley, the women rolled to a 17-10 finish in both match-ups. They also defeated the University of Massachusetts, 21-6.
Freshman Avery Nackman (Katonah, NY) led Bruno in the foil event with a 14-1 finish on the day. Sophomore Yukiko Kunitomo (Wellesley, MA) earned a 12-3 finish while classmate Vivian Truong (Brooklyn, NY) compiled a 10-5 record.
In the epee event, Bruno had two top finishers. Freshman Cory Abbe led the team with a 12-2 finish and senior Robyn Thvedt (Tucson, AZ) was 11-1 on the day.
In the saber event, freshman Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, CA) and senior captain Randy Alevi (Old Westbury, NY) both compiled 14-1 finishes for Bruno.
The men defeated Boston University, 23-4, New Hampshire, 25-2 and UMass, 21-6. They dropped a 13-14 decision to Sacred Heart.
In the men’s foil, Brown was led by freshman James Golin, who finished a perfect 6-0 on the day. Junior Jonathan Yu (Birmingham, AL) compiled a 6-1 finish to help lead the Bears.
In the men’s epee event, Bruno was led by freshman Kelly McGuire (Park City, UT) with a 6-2 finish and senior David Pagliaccio (Dobbs Ferry, NY) with a 7-2 mark.
In the saber event, freshman Teddy Weller led the way with an 11-1 finish and sophomore Peter Tyson (Stony Brook, NY) finished with a 10-2 mark.
The Bears will be back in action on December 5, when they compete in the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, MA.
