Brown Fencers Drop Matches to Cornell, Harvard and Penn
Waltham, MA -
On Sunday, February 1, the Brown fencing team squared off against Ivy rivals Cornell (women only), Harvard and Penn as well as Yeshiva (men only), Penn State, UNC and NYU. Brown was only able to come away with one victory, the men's 24-3 triumph over Yeshiva. The weekend's event against several Ivy and National powerhouses was the toughest competition for the Bears this season. With this in mind, the team's focus was on individual goals, with each fencer fighting to secure a strong enough win-loss record to qualify for NCAA regionals in March.
Several Brown fencers ended the day with excellent win-loss records. All-American women's epeeist Ruth Schneider '06 finished the day 15-3, the strongest record on the team. Schneider's effort helped the Brown women's epee squad beat Harvard and Penn to end the day 2-4.
Brown's stellar men's foilist, freshman Jeremy Zeitlin, continued his excellent first season with the Bears finishing 12-6 and leading his squad to a 9-0 sweep of Yeshiva. Women's foilist Jennifer Hausmann '07 ended the day with an 8-10 record.
Brown's saber squad had several noteworthy individual records as well. Women's saberist Cristina Rodriguez-Hart '04 fought her way to a 10-8 record, quite impressive for someone with only one season of previous competitive fencing experience. Rodriguez-Hart beat NCAA 2003 Bronze Medalist Heather Brosnan of Penn State with a very decisive score of 5-1. Men's sabrist Jeremy Adler '06, finished the day with 12-6 and led his squad to a fantastic 9-0 sweep of Yeshiva.
Next weekend, Brown fencers will face an equally tough challenge at an invitational meet against Ivy powerhouses Columbia and Yale.
