Bears Place Second At Connecticut College Show

New London, CT - Brown had a strong show this afternoon, but was unable to defeat UConn, as the Huskies now have a 27 point lead with the conclusion of the fall season. The show came down to walk trot, and the Huskies edged out the Bears 44 to 39 in another close finish.

The day began in open fences, where Brown had strong performances led by point rider Whitney Keefe. Keefe won her class and collected seven points for the Bears. Co-captain Jamie Peddy also had a first place finish while co-captain Alexis Gilbard placed fourth and Marissa Geoffroy finished in fifth for Brown. In intermediate fences, point rider Rachel Roemer won her class for another seven points for the Brown squad. The score stood 14-9, the Bears holding a five-point edge over UConn. In novice fences, the Huskies closed the gap and tied things up at 14 when point rider Courtney Pop placed fourth. Also finishing with a fourth place finish was Anna Mori while Katie Goetz, Rachel Rubin and Kim Michenberg finished up in fifth. The Bear's top finisher was Emma Clippinger who came in second.

In open flat, the Bear's top riders Petty and Keefe were in the same class and took the first and second spots, as Peddy was the point rider and tallied five points for the Brown side. UConn though won their class and recorded seven points to grab a two lead over the Bears. Also pinning in the flat was Geoffroy who finished third and Gilbard and Jess Mendelson each placed sixth in the event. In intermediate flat, point rider Jade Palomino placed second, but UConn once again had a first place finish padding their lead to four with a score of 28-24 in UConn's favor. In novice flat, point rider Aurora Tower pinned third for four points, while UConn had another first place finish for a 33-28 edge in the overall score. Other top finishers for Brown were Goetz who came in first, while Mori and Clippinger finished up in second.

In beginner walk trot canter, Brown looked to make up some ground when point rider Emily Cole came in first, but the Huskie's lead still stood at five when their point rider also finished in first in her respective class. Sarah Morris and Kelly Qu had a first place finish in their first show in a new division, while Leona Rosenblum and Irmak Tasindi also had a strong showing both getting a second place finish. Completing in her last collegiate show Tower finished up with a third place finish.

With the score at 40-35 UConn, the Bears knew the show would come down to the final event Walk Trot Canter. Point rider Stephanie Syc had a good ride, but was in a talented class and pinned third for four points and the UConn rider once again drew a first place score putting the final score at 44-39 UConn. Kristin Beck and Lucia Corso both rode very well and finished first in their respective classes.

With the conclusion of the fall season, the Bears trail UConn by a score of 197-165 and are looking to make up ground in the spring season, which starts in February.
