WARREN, RI -- The Brown equestrian team won the High Point College Award on Sunday, October 28 hosting its only home show of the season with Roger Williams University at Windswept Farm in Warren, RI. The team scored 41 points, edging second place URI by three points.
The win moves Brown into first place in Region I, Zone 1 with 116 points, ahead of Salve Regina College with 110 and University of Connecticut with 102. Brown picked up eleven first places and the High Point Rider Award on the way to the over-all win.
Co-captain Elizabeth Quadros '02 won her open flat and finished third over fences. Kate Segarra '02 also won open flat and finished third in intermediate fences. The third place gave Segarra enough points to qualify for the Regional competition in April and move her up to the open division.
Amanda Forte '02 won both open flat and open fences, which qualified her for the ride-off for the High Point trophy. Also qualifying for the ride-off was co-captain Chelsea Hamilton '03 with double blues in novice. These wins qualified Hamilton for Regionals and moved her into the intermediate division. In the ride-off, Forte prevailed and earned the High Point Rider Award for the show.
In the novice division, Jennifer Kim '04 finished first in jumping and third on the flat. In the walk-trot-canter division, both Caroline Preston '02 and Ann Rundquist '02 followed last week's blue ribbons with another win, each qualifying for Regionals and moving into the novice division. Brown swept the walk-trot division with wins from Shahida Farooqi '03 and Galyn Burke '05. Sunday's win makes it three straight for Burke in her first season of equestrian competition.
The equestrian team travels to Wesleyan on November 9 to continue its hunt for the Region I championship and another trip to Nationals.
