Storrs, CT - Even a three-week layoff could not slow the Brown equestrian team down, as the Bears took first place for the third time in as many shows on Saturday. Bruno finished with 45 points, three more than host Connecticut, to improve its Region 1 lead over the Huskies to 24 points, 125 to 101. Tied after six of eight events, the Bears were able to pull out a win late, getting first- or second-place finishes out of all but one of their point riders on the day.
The Bears also had the High Point Rider for the third consecutive week, as sophomore Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) took the honor for the second straight show. Senior Irmak Tasindi (Istanbul, Turkey) won reserve high point rider as well, the second Brown rider to do that this season.
In all, 22 Brown riders competed, earning nine blue ribbons, five of which came from point riders. Senior Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) started the Bears off with a second-place ribbon in Open Flat, which freshman Allegra Aron (Burlingame, CA) matched as the point rider in Intermediate Flat.
In Novice, point rider Tasindi and Bogdonoff both earned blue ribbons, with Tasindi starting a string of four blue ribbons for Brown point riders. Senior Lucia Corso (New Haven, CT) won her class in Beginner Walk Trot Canter, junior Kiauntee Murray (Jersey City, NJ) took a blue ribbon in Walk Trot, and freshman Brianne Goutal (New York, NY) won in Open Fences. Senior Kristen Beck (Basking Ridge, NJ) also took a blue ribbon in her class of Advanced Walk Trot Canter. Tasindi and Bogdonoff later finished the day with their second blue ribbons of the day, with Bogdonoff winning a ride-off for High Point Rider.
Four Bears made their collegiate debuts on Saturday. Freshman Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) was fifth in her class of Intermediate Fences as Brown's point rider, but won her class of Novice Flat. Sophomore Emily Bourdeau (Longmeadow, MA) finished second to Gruener in Novice Flat. Two more Bears debuted in Walk Trot - senior Meredith Woodhouse (Wayzata, MN), who finished third, and sophomore Kona Shen (Seattle, WA), who pinned fifth.
With eight points on the day, Goutal retained the Region 1 Open Rider Standings lead, with 33 points on the year. She lead's Connecticut's Tara Lynch by three points and Johnson & Wales' Jess Penn by seven. Keefe is currently in fourth with 22 points.
Three more Brown riders qualified for Regionals at the event, giving the Bears eight already in nine events. Bogdonoff qualified in Novice Flat, while Beck and senior Stephanie Syc (Lake Forest, IL) qualified in Advanced Walk Trot Canter. Bogdonoff also sits one point from qualifying in Novice Fences, while Tasindi is three away in Novice Flat.
The fall half of the Region 1 schedule is now half over. Next Saturday, Connecticut College will host a show at Mystic Valley Hunt Club in Glades Ferry, Conn.
