The equestrian team had a first place finish a the Teykio Post today, October 16, giving them a ten point lead in the region. Going into the final event Walk Trot, the Bears needed point rider Gabriela Gargano to score four points or higher then Connecticut to preserve a victory. Gargano had a perfect ride in the final class taking first while Connecticut's rider finished fourth to give Brown the win.
In Open Fences, point rider Jamie Peddy and Whitney Keefe each finished second in their respective classes while Alexis Gilbard took third and Leila Ledsinger placed sixth. In Intermediate Fences, point rider Rachel Roemer and Jessica Mendelson both finished second in their respective classes.
In Open Flat, point rider Jamie Peddy finished with her second first place finish of the day while, Leila Ledsinger placed second. Gilliam Heinecke, Alexis Gilbard and Whitney Keefe each turned in a fourth place performance. Point Rider Grace Peloquin took fifth in Intermediate Flat and in Novice Flat, Heidi Abrech. Ariana Arenas and point rider Rachel Roemer each earned a first place finish in their respective classes. Abrech and Arenas qualified for the high point ride off because of their first place finishes in both flat and fences. Abrecht had a tough ride changing center leads twice and rode down the long side of the course but, pulled it out and took first place.
In Advanced Walk Trot Canter Katie Goetz took first for the Bears while Natalie Forbes finished in third and Jenny Fauth placed fourth. Point rider Galyn Burke had a tough ride finishing in an unusal fifth place.
Katie Osborn and Connie Lee both had a third place finish in Beginner Walk Trot Cantar, while Anna Mori finished fourth and Sarah Clark placed sixth. At this point in the show the three top teams all had a chance to win going into the last event Walk Trot. The scores were UConn with 36 points, Brown with 33 points and Roger Williams with 31 points. For Brown to take the show point rider Gabriela Gargano needed to finish four points or more higher then the UConn rider. Gargano would place first while the UConn rider placed fourth giving the Bears the win. Also placing in Walk Trot was Rebecca Sills finishing in third and Lizzie Freudmann placing fifth.
The Bears now lead the region with 84 points followed by UConn with 74 and Roger Williams with 72. The Bears look to continue their strong performance when they travel to Hartford, CT for the Trinity show on Saturday, October 30.
