Bethany, CT - On the strength of three blue ribbons by point riders, the Brown equestrian team finished in a tie for first place at its show at Post University Saturday. Junior Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) won a ride-off for high point rider after nabbing the Bears first-place points in both Open Fences and Open Flat. Junior Kimberly Mickenberg (Armonk, NY) was the other Brown point rider to pin first, taking a blue in Novice Flat and earning a move up to Intermediate Flat.
The Bears' day got off to an auspicious start in Open Fences. In addition to Keefe's blue ribbon, senior Gillian Heinecke (Concord, NH) took a blue in her class, followed by sophomore Cody Auer (Fairfield, CT), who pinned second. In Intermediate Fences, point rider Liz Giliberti (Washington, DC) pinned third for four points. The Bears then dropped its Novice Fences ride when point rider Courtney Pope (Concord, MA) did not pin.
Keefe got her team back on track with a first-place ride in Open Flat, with senior Marissa Geoffroy pinning second in her class. Senior Grace Peloquin pinned fifth in Intermediate Flat to get the Bears two points, and Mickenberg followed with her blue in Novice.
In Walk Trot Canter, Siti Nur Sarah Morris (Silver Spring, MD) took home fourth place for three points. In the same division, junior Emily Cole (Clayton, MO) pinned second to move up to Novice. Point rider Stephanie Syc (Lake Forest, IL) did not pin in Walk Trot, and five points from the URI point rider placed the two teams in a tie.
This Saturday, Oct. 21, the Bears will travel compete at the University of Connecticut, where they'll be hosted by their prime rivals in Zone 1.
