Springfield, MA - Thanks to a pair of great rides by freshmen Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) and Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, NH), the Brown equestrian team sat in third place after day one at the IHSA National Horse Show Thursday. The Bears have 10 points after four classes, behind Virginia Intermont (23 points) and the University of Findlay (18 points).
Griffith started the competition for the Bears, taking second place in her Flat class. Freshman Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, DC) had a good ride in the next class, but was not called back and did not pin. Bogdonoff pinned next, with sophomore Leona Rosenblum (New York, NY) failing to pin in the day's final class for the team competition.
Between Bogdonoff and Rosenblum's rides, junior tri-captain Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) competed in the Flat portion of the Cacchione Cup competition. Keefe drew a horse from URI that began bucking during her ride, but Keefe was able to get the horse back under control, and the judges rewarded her by pinning her third.
Three more classes in the team competition will be shown on Friday, with the final class on Saturday.
