Glades Ferry, CT - The Bears rode well over the weekend at the Regional Championship, qualifying three riders to compete individually at the Zone 1 Championships on Saturday. Junior Liz Giliberti (Washington, D.C.), the Cacchione Cup representative from Region 1, sophomore Allegra Aron (Burlingame, CA) and junior Kona Shen (Seattle, WA) each placed first or second in their events to make the cut for next weekend.
In Intermediate Fences, the second event of the day, sophomore Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) had an impressive ride, but finished third in a competitive class, just one place out of qualification. As a result of the team's regular season finish, however, Gruener will be able to compete in the team competition for Brown, where she will ride in the Intermediate Flat.
Bruno looked strong in the Open Flat as well, as both Giliberti and sophomore Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) were among the eight finalists in the event. Giliberti took the win, sending her to Zones, while Fishelson placed a competitive seventh overall. Aron then followed with a win in Intermediate Flat, giving the Bears their second automatic qualifier.
Following a short break for schooling, senior Emma Clippinger (Cambrige, MA) picked things back up with a solid ride in the Novice Fences, although she fell just short of the cut off with a fourth place finish. Gruener also had another near miss in the Novice Flat, again barely missing when she pinned third.
In the final event of the day, Shen ensured that the event would end on a positive note for the Bears, as she was called back as a finalist in the Walk Trot, and went on to win the class, qualifying herself for Zones as well.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Mt. Holyoke to compete at the Zone 1 Championship beginning at 9:00 a.m.
