Brown Rides to First Place

Feb. 23, 2009

Glades Ferry, CT - The Brown equestrian squad took first at Connecticut College over the weekend, regaining their lead in the region with four shows to go. Junior Liz Giliberti (Washington, D.C.) also had an impressive individual day, and continued to increase her lead in the standings for the Cacchione Cup.

Kicking off the show with the Open Flat, the Bears immediately set the tone for the day, as Giliberti pinned first in her class for an early seven points. Things continued to roll along in the Intermediate Flat, as junior point rider Emily Bourdeau (Longmeadow, MA) picked up a third. Though not the point rider, senior Emma Clippinger (Cambridge, MA) followed Bourdeau with a second place of her own, potentially keeping points away from other teams.

In the Novice Flat, Brown riders combined for a first, two seconds, and two thirds, an impressive showing. Senior point rider Leona Rosenblum (New York, N.Y.) pinned second to give Brown five points, and in the process pointed up to Intermediate Flat. With Rosenblum's finish, Bruno held a slim two-point lead on the field. However, in the advanced Walk Trot Canter, freshman point rider Cara Rosenbaum (Bedford, N.Y.) won her class, scoring another seven points. Bruno dominated the Walk Trot division as well, winning all three classes in the division. Junior point rider Rebecca de Sa (Rye, N.Y.) led the way, picking up a win for the Bears before the action moved to the fences.

Giliberti took over as the point rider once again in Open Fences, but she did not pin, courtesy of a bad draw, and the event would ultimately be Brown's drop. Bruno got back on track in the Intermediate Fences, however, as junior Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) pinned third, upping Brown's lead to seven points. Another third in Novice Fences to wrap up the day gave Brown the win, beating UConn by a 38-31 margin.

The Bears will be back in action on March 7, when they travel to UConn.
