Equestrian Team Unable To Cut Into UConn's Lead

Storrs, CT - The equestrian competed in their first show of 2006, but was unable to cut into UConn's lead in the region. The Bears had tough draws all afternoon as the home squad UConn, won the show tallying 31 points and Brown came in a disappointing third with 26 points.

The show opened up on open flat, where Jamie Peddy and Whitney Keefe had good rides, but Keefe's horse picked up the wrong lead, and was quickly corrected by Keefe, but it wasn't enough as she did not place. Peddy pinned first, but UConn jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their high point rider placed second in her class. The other two Brown riders competing in the event is freshman Cody Auer and senior captain Alexis Gilbard. Auer pinned second in her class, but Gilbard drew the same horse Keefe had and was unable to pin after the horse again took the wrong lead.

In intermediate flat, point rider Rachel Roemer and Ariana Arcenas both place second in their respective classes, while the UConn point rider did not place, putting Brown in a tie for first place after the second division.

In novice flat Jenny John and Rachel Lubin had Brown's top finish both grabbing second place in their respective classes while Katie Goetz and Dana Liljegren turned in fourth place finishes. Point Rider came in third, for four points, giving UConn a 12-9 lead.

Brown was able to cut the deficit to one point in the walk trot canter after point rider Emily Cole placed first for seven points while the UConn point rider placed second for the 17-16 score in favor of the Huskies. Brown's other top finishers were Kelly Qu who came in second and Leona Rosenblum who finished third in her class.

In the following event, walk trot, the Bears took a two point lead, when point rider Kristin Beck pinned second for five points and UConn's point rider placed fifth fro two points for a 21-19 score.

In open fences UConn was able to make up points after a controversial fourth place pin for Keefe. Keefe had a perfect, while the other riders in her class made errors, but she only pinned fourth for three points while the UConn rider finished third for four points.

The other three Brown riders in open fences, Auer, Gilbard and Peddy all had strong performances as Gilbard and Auer placed second and Peddy finished in third.

The difference maker proved to be in intermediate fences, as Roemer did not pin and UConn's did putting the score at UConn 30 and Brown 24. Jade Palomino had a strong performance and finished third.

The Bears had another tough draw in novice fences, as Pope pinned in fifth for two points putting the final score at UConn winning with 31 points, URI took second with 30 and Brown came in third with 26 points.

The Bears will return to action on February 25 when they travel to the Wesleyan show.
