Storrs, CT - Buoyed by three blue ribbons, the Brown equestrian team opened the spring half of its season with a second-place at the University of Connecticut on Saturday. In finishing two points behind the host Huskies, the Bears maintained their lead in Region 1 by 19 points with three shows to go.
Despite keeping its lead relatively in tact, the highlight of the day for Brown came from a non-point rider. After taking blue ribbons in both Novice Flat and Intermediate Fences, freshman Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) squared off with UConn's Tara Lynch, the current Open Rider Point Standings leader by a healthy margin in Region 1, in a ride-off for High-Point Rider honors. However, Gruener was able to win the David vs. Goliath pairing, being named High-Point Rider.
As for the Bears' point riders, things got off to a bit of a shaky start, as senior Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) and sophomore Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) earned fourth-place ribbons in Open and Intermediate Flat. However, sophomore Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, NH) came through with a first-place finish, moving Brown to within two points of UConn with a drop. Griffith also pointed out of Novice Flat, qualifying for Regionals.
In Walk Trot Canter, freshman Katie Eng (New York, NY) earned the Bears' third fourth-place finish. Sophomore Kona Shen (Seattle, WA) got the ball rolling for Brown again with a blue ribbon in Walk Trot, followed by a second from Keefe and a first from Bogdonoff in Open and Intermediate Fences to pull the Bears to within three of the Huskies. Griffith took fourth in Novice Fences to close the scoring for Brown, pointing out and qualifying for Regionals in that event as well.
Other highlights for Brown included a blue ribbon from sophomore Jill Griffith (Chatham, MA) in Walk Trot and seconds from freshman Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, MA) in Open Flat and senior Meredith Woodhouse (Wayzata, MN) in Walk Trot.
The next show for Brown comes this Saturday at Windcrest Farm, hosted by Wesleyan.
