Equestrian Gains Five Blue Ribbons, Finishes Second at Holy Cross Show

HOLLISTON, Mass. – Brown University equestrian won five blue ribbons and finished second at the Holy Cross IHSA Show on Saturday at August Farm in the Bears' spring regular season finale.

In the team standings, Brown registered 36 points, finishing in second out of 11 schools with the University of Rhode Island taking first with 44 points. URI captured first place in the IHSA Zone 1 Region 1 Team Standings for the season, edging Brown, 308-297.

In the Cacchione Cup, given to the region's high point rider, junior captain Kabisa Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) finished in second place with 79 points while URI's Lauren Henry earned first with 84 points on the year.

A total of 10 Bears have qualified for the Zone 1 Region 1 Regionals with Baughen leading the way as a qualifier in open flat and open fences. Senior captain Elena Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.) and junior Samantha Spear (Chester Springs, Pa.) each qualified in both intermediate flat and intermediate fences.

Sophomore Victoria Flagg (Great Falls, Va.) and junior Clara Mae Maynard (Chilmark, Mass.) each qualified in novice flat while sophomore Sara Nordstrom (Medina, Wash.) qualified in open flat.

Senior captain Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) earned a spot in intermediate flat while classmate Noel Park (Baton Rouge, La.) qualified in walk-trot. Senior Tori Sasaki (London, England) and sophomore Anna Seto (Barrington, R.I.) each qualified in walk-trot-canter.

The top two riders in each division in regionals move on to the Zone 1 Finals while the top two riders in each division at zones advance to the IHSA National Championships.

Brown's blue-ribbon, first-place finishers at Holy Cross on Saturday included Baughen in open flat, Flagg in her intermediate flat debut, Nordstrom in open fences, sophomore Rebecca Chernick (Weston, Mass.) in walk-trot-canter, and freshman Yinan Liu in walk-trot.

In open flat Baughen took first while Nordstrom pinned second. In intermediate flat, Flagg placed first, Berg came in second, and senior Sophia Cohen (Greenwich, Conn.) finished fourth.

Seto and fellow sophomores Lily Hertling (Paris, France) and Madison Kuhn (Lancaster, Pa.) each came in third in her respective class in novice flat while Seto took third in novice fences.

In open fences, Nordstrom, Baughen, and Cohen placed first, third, and fifth respectively while in intermediate fences Berg and sophomore Sophie de Menil (New York, N.Y.) pinned fourth and fifth respectively.

Moving to walk-trot-canter, Chernick won her class, freshman Wallace Douglas pinned second, and sophomore Elizabeth Rao (Andover, Mass.) came in fifth. In walk-trot, Liu earned first, and sophomore Natalia Moriel (Ciudad Juarez, Mexico) finished in sixth.

Next, Brown will begin its postseason at the Zone 1 Region 1 Regionals on Saturday, March 26 at Claddagh Farm in Tiverton, R.I.
