Equestrian Wins UMass Dartmouth Show, Baughen Earns High Point Rider

TIVERTON, R.I. – Junior captain Kabisa Baughen won high point rider with a pair of first-place finishes, senior captain Elena Buchsbaum tied for reserve high point rider, and Brown University equestrian won the UMass Dartmouth IHSA Show at Roseland Acres on Saturday.

The Bears tallied 35 points as a team to edge the host Corsairs (34 points) and remain atop the 11-school IHSA Zone 1 Region 1 standings with 142 points through four shows on the season.

Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) earned blue ribbons in both open fences and open flat while Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.) garnered a first-place finish in intermediate flat and placed second in intermediate fences.

Sophomore Sara Nordstrom (Seattle, Wash.) and senior Tori Sasaki (London, England) each took home blue ribbons, finishing first in their classes in open flat and advanced walk-trot-canter, respectively.

In open fences, Nordstrom placed sixth alongside Baughen's first-place finish while in intermediate fences, sophomore Annaliese Fries (Kirkland, Wash.) took fifth in her class to go with Buchsbaum's second-place mark. In novice fences, sophomore Lily Hertling (Paris, France) pinned fourth in her class.

On the flat, Buaghen and Nordstrom each won her class in the open division, and senior Tess Carter (Tucson, Ariz.) followed with a fifth-place showing. In intermediate flat, Buchsbaum and fellow senior captain Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) garnered first and second place respectively in their classes while senior Sophia Cohen (Greenwich, Conn.) took fifth.

Moving to novice flat, sophomore Victoria Flagg (Great Falls, Va.) paced Brown with a second-place finish in her class while Hertling pinned fifth, and senior Alexa Van Hattum (Grand Rapids, Mich.) gained a fourth-place mark.

Sasaki led the Bears with her blue ribbon in advanced walk-trot-canter, and sophomore Anna Seto (Barrington, R.I.) supported her with a fourth-place finish in her class. Sophomore Roshan Moazed (Brookline, Mass.) placed sixth in beginner walk-trot-canter.

Two Bears made their horse show debuts in the walk-trot division as sophomores Genoveva Eguiguren (Quito, Ecuador) and Natalia Moriel (Ciudad Juarez, Mexico) pinned fourth and sixth in their respective classes. Sophomore Keri Brooks (Yigo, Guam) took fifth in her class.

Next, Brown will compete at the University of Rhode Island IHSA Show on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club in Glades Ferry, Conn.
