GLADES FERRY, Conn. – Blue ribbons for freshman Samantha Spear (Chester Springs, Pa.), senior Charlotte McGoldrick (Virginia Water, England), senior Sophia Rabb (Weston, Mass.), sophomore Aine Doyle (Newbawn, Ireland) and freshman Alex VanHattum (Kentwood, Mich.) helped the Brown equestrian team earn its third runner-up finish of the year with a season-high 35 points at the University of Rhode Island Show at Mystic Valley Hunt Club on Saturday.
The Bears stood in fourth place through four events but a slew of impressive performances in the fences and walk trot events sent Brown leaping into second place, just three points behind host and first-place recipient URI.
Junior Amanda Picciotto (New York, N.Y.) led things off with a third-place ride on Merry, followed by freshman point rider Kabisa Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) landing in sixth place after her horse Justin swapped leads when asked to move up. Spear picked up the slack and pinned second in the intermediate fences second class to shift Brown to third place.
In open flat, Picciotto pinned second as the point on a bay named Tresnor and senior Kelsey MacPherson (Kansas City, Mo.) claimed third to lift Brown's total to seven points. The Bears then turned in several strong showings throughout the four classes of intermediate flat, highlighted by Spear's first-place ride in 5C. Baughen place second as the point rider in 5D, McGoldrick finished third in 5B and sophomore Tess Carter (Tucson, Ariz.) came in fourth in 5D to boost Brown to 12 points for a fourth-place tie with Roger Williams.
Moving on to fences, the Bears saw McGoldrick and Rabb point up in their respective events. McGoldrick seized a blue ribbon in 4B of novice fences to move to intermediate fences, while Rabb's top spot in 3B of intermediate fences lifts her to intermediate flat. Sophomore Elena Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.) rode to third place honors in novice fences 4B on Tango, a popular horse with Brown equestrian alumnae, while sophomore Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) took fourth in 4A to give the team 16 points for an undisputed hold on third place.
Brown broke the 30-point threshold after walk trot canter thanks to blue ribbons from point rider Doyle and VanHattum. Senior Sophie Van Horne (Summit, N.J.) pinned third in 2BD and junior Meg Hassan (Exeter, N.H.) grabbed fourth as both riders pointed up to novice.
In the walk trot finale, senior Shannon Whittaker (Jamaica, N.Y.) placed second in 1C to level up to walk trot canter. Freshman Leah Loerinc (North Dartmouth, Mass.) controlled a grey pony named Froggy to take fourth in 1B and push Brown to 35 points for a second-place overall finish.
Brown is slated to wrap up the fall season next Saturday at the Rhode Island College Show.
