Providence, R.I. – Brown equestrian opened its 2012-13 season at the Roger Williams Show on Saturday. It was a limited show with only two riders per division, per school in the fences and three in the flat. The Bears finished with 32 team points, behind Roger Williams, URI and UMass-Dartmouth.
And after the first show of the year, senior Lindsay Wong leads the Cacchione Cup ( High Point Rider) field with 12 points. Jess Duva from JWU has eight, Lundsay Byrnes from RWU and Sam Enright have six and Laura Pandiani from Assumption has two.
Brown also had a regional qualifier at the event in Elizabeth Mahoney who placed first in the intermediate flat and also pointed up to the open flat event.
In the open fences Wong, Brown's point rider in the event pinned first while Allison Dungey finished just behind her in second to give the Bears an early three-point lead over the field.
Point rider in the novice fences Hailey Roumimper placed second overall to keep Brown in a 14-point tie with RWU for first place.
The open flat saw Wong pin second in her event and Amanda Picciotto take first at her level, but Roger Williams had a strong showing to push ahead of the Bears, 21-19.
Rookie point rider Tess Carter pinned second in the intermediate flat to help Brown back in a 24-all tie with RWU for first. The Bears also got two second-place finishes in the Novice flat to stay tied for first at 28 points each.
Brown had trouble in the walk trot canter as freshman Adele Ruppert was the only rider to finish above third, pinning second in the beginners level as Brown fell to third with 31 points, behind Roger Williams (35) and URI (32).
Strong rides by RWU, URI and UMD in the walk trot took advantage of Brown beginning without a few experienced riders who were out due to illness.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, October 20, at the Becker Show.
