Gales Ferry, Conn. – The Brown equestrian team was in action for the first time in 2012, taking on its regional competition is a show hosted by URI. The Bears trailed early, but came from behind to register a second-place tie. Brown still maintains a 26-point lead over the Rams in season total tally.
The day started with the open fences as point rider Jackie Lubrano pinned second for five team points as the Bears trailed only Assumption after the first event. Anna Baker pinned third in the intermediate fencers, but Roger Williams had a good event and moved four points ahead of Brown for first.
Lubrano road as the point rider in the open flat and pinned second while senior Rebecca McGoldrick won her class as the Bears pulled within two points of RWU.
In the intermdiate flat, rookie Elizabeth Mahoney came in first in her group and point rider Allison Dungery finished second, while URI made a push to tie Roger Williams for first with Brown still two points back.
The Bears fell behind in the fences and the novice flat as they trailed URI (27 points), RIC (23), RWU (20) and Becker (19) with 18 points.
Brown began its comeback in the walk trot canter as point rider Hannah Estlund won her class and Lexi Nuttbrown also pinned first as the Bears closed to within two point of second-place Roger Williams and seven of URI.
The walk trot was the final event and the Bears made the most of it, getting seven points as Tene Johnson pinned first to bring Brown into a second-place tie with RWU.
The next show will be held March 10, and hosted by UMass-Dartmouth in Westport, Mass.
