Hebron, Conn. – The Brown equestrian team continued its winnings ways on Saturday, taking the top spot in a show hosted by Holy Cross. Not only did the Bears take the team title, but Brown notched its 10th Cacchione Cup in 14 years as a Division I program.
In the Open Fences senior captain and Cacchione Cup contender, Elise Fishelson tied her rival Kayla Lafontaine from URI in the cup standings.
In the second class, Fishelson found herself in the same class as Lafontaine and placed third on Cassie for three points. Lindsay Wong came in fifth on Bellony. Lafontaine came in fourth for three points to keep the tie for the cup. A trip to Nationals would depend on Open Flat results.
The Intermediate Fences saw first class point rider Allison Dungey pin second on Bellony.
In the first class of the Novice Fences, point rider Cara Rosenbaum won the class on Julip. In the third class, freshman Maya Manning pinned fourth on Roy. In the fourth class, senior Dara Goldberg placed fifth in her first show jumping after having pointed up from Walk Trot Canter.
In the Open Flat with the Cacchione Cup on the line, Fishelson pinned first for seven points securing at least a tie in the standings with a ride-off at Regionals next week.
In the next class, URI's Prefontaine came in on Bear while Gruener was on Cassie and McGoldrick on Bellony. McGoldrick came in first despite a wrong lead which she quickly corrected, handing Prefontaine second and giving the Cup to Fishelson. Gruener came in third.
Final score for the two Cacchione Cup leaders for the year - Fishelson 84; Prefontaine 82.
In the 14 years since Brown Equestrian became a varsity sport the Bears have had the Cacchione Cup rider in our Region 10 times.

Cacchione Cup riders will next compete officially at Nationals. They will have a practice show at Zones, however, in both Flat and Fences. This will give them a chance to see how they compare with other Cacchione Cup riders.
Holy Cross 24
The Bears are back in action next Saturday at Mystic Valley Hunt in Gales Ferry Conn. Each rider in the Region who has earned 35 points in a division (28 for open) will compete for a spot at Zones. The top two riders in each division from each Region advances to Zones. The top two riders at Zones go on to Nationals as individuals. Regionals is only for individual qualifiers.
The top team from each region will next compete at Zones and the top two teams at Zones will go on to Nationals.
