Brown Equestrian Qualifies Three for IHSA Nationals

Providence, RI – Though the Brown equestrian team narrowly missed qualifying for the IHSA Nationals as a team over the weekend, the Bears did have two riders place well enough to earn individual bids, joining senior Liz Giliberti (Washington, DC), who had already clinched a spot by winning the Cacchione Cup.  Junior Katy Eng (New York, NY) and sophomore Rebecca McGoldrick (Virginia Water, England) placed in the top-two in the Novice Fences and Novice Flat respectively, earning trips to Kentucky for the national championships.

In the individual events, Eng turned in an impressive ride in the Novice Fences to earn Brown’s first championship bid of the afternoon.  After Giliberti pinned fourth in a Cacchione Cup practice round, McGoldrick followed in the Novice Flat with a second place finish, good enough for another national qualifier for the Bears.

On the team side, Brown found itself down early, as both Mount Holyoke and Stonehill got out to fast starts.  McGoldrick began the comeback bid in the Collegiate Cup Intermediate Flat though, pinning third to pull the Bears to within five points of second.  Kona Shen (Seattle, WA) and rookie Karolina Woroniecka (Great Neck, NY) then came up with blue ribbons in the Walk Trot Canter and Walk Trot respectively to bring Brown within two points heading into the final event.  However, Holyoke and Stonehill were able to take the top two positions, holding on to take the two team qualifying positions.

The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to Dartmouth to compete in the Ivy League Championships on April 17.
