Storrs, CT - The Bears wracked up 32 points at UConn over the weekend, placing third overall and finishing just four points behind the host Huskies, who won with 36. The margin was slim enough to allow Brown to hold onto its season standings lead though, remaining ahead of URI by nine points with three shows remaining in the season.
The day began with Open Flat, where point rider Liz Giliberti got the Bears off to a good start with a first in her class, beating URI's Mariel Saccucci in a head-to-head matchup of the top two riders in the Cacchione Cup standings. Dakota Gruener then followed with a second in the next class, playing solid defense while helping the Bears block points from other teams.
In Novice Flat, senior Cara Rosenbaum continued her impressive 2009-10 season, pinning first in her class. The hot riding continued later in the event, when Anna Baker also won her class, putting Brown in a tie for second after a drop.
Wrapping up the Flat events, point rider Helen Mou turned in a solid performance in Advanced Walk Trot Canter, placing second in her class. She was followed by freshman Karolina Woroniecka in the Walk Trot, who took another first for Brown.
Turning to Fences, Giliberti continued to ride well in the Open division, pinning third in her class. The Bears struggled in the remainder of the classes though, and narrowly fell into third by the end of the show, finishing with 32 points.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they have a doubleheader at JWU and Trinity.
