Equestrian Takes Third to Open Season
The Bears kicked off the 2009-2010 season at URI's Faith Hill Farm over the weekend, riding to a solid third-place finish with 34 points. Defending Cacchione Cup rider Liz Giliberti led Bruno with a pair of solid showings, placing third in Open Fences and first in the Open Flat to give Brown 11 points.
After Giliberti started the show with her third, point rider Rachel Griffith followed with a fifth place over Intermediate Fences, which would become a drop for the Bears. Sophomore Emily Bourdeau then had a nice ride in the Novice Fences, though she was not the point rider. However, rookie Allison Dungey placed second in her class as the scoring rider, pushing Brown into sixth after the jumps.
Moving to the Flat divisions, Giliberti once again started things for the Bears, placing first in the Open class to vault Bruno into a tie for third. In Intermediate Flat, Brown got another nice ride from a non-scoring rider, as Dakota Gruener placed first in her class. Finally, Rebecca McGoldrick followed with a first place in the Novice Flat, earning seven points for the Bears and pushing their total to 25 on the afternoon.
Wrapping up the competition, Brown got another first from Kona Shen, an IHSA qualifier last season, though as a non-point rider, and then ended the show on a high note as Kelsey MacMillan picked up seven points with a first in Walk-Trot, giving Brown 34 for the day, good for third overall.
Host team URI won the show with 39 points, while Connecticut took a close second with 36. The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they host a show on Sunday, October 11.
