Providence, R.I. - Senior guard Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) connected on a trey with 7.2 seconds remaining to break a 65-65 tie, and added two free throws with four seconds left to ice the game and lead Brown (3-0) to its third straight win to open the season, 70-68, over Quinnipiac at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Tamenang Choh's layup with 1:51 remaining tied the game for the Bears, 65-65. Hunsaker came up with a steal, giving Brown possession with 28 seconds remaining.
Following a Brown timeout, Hunsaker then knocked down a trey on an inbounds pass from Choh with 7.2 seconds remaining for a 68-65 lead. Quinnipiac threw the ball away and Hunsaker converted two free throws to secure the win. A late trey by Quinnipiac's Rich Kelly accounted for the final score.
"I'm proud of our team," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "Quinnipiac is a good team, difficult to guard and well coached. We did a great job of defending the 3-point line and limiting their attempts. We haven't seen a lot of zone and we saw it for the full 40 minutes tonight."
Bears' senior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field, and matched his career high with four treys (4-10). Hunsaker finished the game with 12 points and matched his career high with seven assists.
Choh posted a double-double for the third straight game with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Bears' senior Josh Howard (Charlotte, NC) had 11 points and five rebounds, while senior Matt DeWolf (Barrington, RI) contributed six points
Quinnipiac was paced by Matt Balanc, who scored 23 points and Kelly with 13 points. Bobcats' 6-8 center Kevin Marfo grabbed 14 rebounds in 18 minutes before fouling out.
An evenly played first half had the Bears leading at intermission, 33-32, behind Anderson's 15 points that included 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
Quinnipiac opened up a 49-44 lead on back-to-back treys by Kelly and Balanc at the 14:14 mark of the second half.
The Bears battled back and pulled ahead, 56-55, on a dunk by Choh on a feed from freshman Dan Friday (Detroit, MI) with 6:00 remaining.
The Bobcats built a 65-61 lead following a Kelly trey, but the Bears clawed back on a layup by Anderson and Choh's layup to tie the game, 65-65.
Next up for the Bears is a midweek matchup at Sacred Heart, traveling to Fairfield, Connecticut to battle the Pioneers on Tuesday, November 19. Tip-off is 7:00 pm.
