Providence, R.I. - With a look to the future, Brown Athletics is in the midst a major initiative to reshape the Erickson Athletic Complex with a donor-funded fields/facility improvement project that features a new field hockey complex, the addition of artificial grass to Stevenson Field, improved lighting and drainage throughout the complex.
All funding for the project is result of donor contributions, with the Brown Sports Foundation taking the lead on the fundraising project.
The construction projects began in early May, starting with the new field hockey complex, which includes the installation of a regulation size, knitted-nylon AstroTurf system playing surface, the premier surface for field hockey, with hockey lines only. The project also includes the construction of spectator stands and a press box. The new field is located adjacent to Meister-Kavan Field and will be completed by September 2012.
Stevenson Field began the first of a two-phase project with the installation of a LigaSport artificial surface for soccer and lacrosse, a product produced by Polytan of Germany, a company that specializes in FIFA approved artificial turf systems, transforming Stevenson Field from natural grass to synthetic grass.
The addition of artificial playing surfaces for field hockey and Stevenson Field will bring the total of synthetic playing surfaces to six at the Erickson Athletic Complex (Meister-Kavan Field, Berylson Family Fields (2), Warner Roof).
As part of the initial project this summer, drainage is being addressed within the entire Erickson Athletic Complex to improve field runoff and overall playing conditions.
In addition, the eagerly anticipated improvements to the lighting was initiated to allow remote control of the lights, decrease the number of bulbs, increase energy efficiency and reduce the spill-over to the neighborhood by re-aiming the lights.
