PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Martin Martinez (Waukegan, Ill.) and Megan Ratcliffe (Carlisle, Mass.) of the Brown men's and women's track & field/cross country programs were both named to their respective 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams, announced on Tuesday as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, as only student-athletes who maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and are significant contributors to their team's success are eligible for nomination.
Martinez, an International Relations / Social Analysis & Research concentrator with a 3.69 GPA, was named a Second Team All-American during the indoor season when he helped the distance medley relay place ninth at the NCAA Championship. He became the first runner in school history to break the four-minute mile barrier on an indoor track when he clocked 3:59.38 at the BU Valentine Invite. Martinez was named an NCAA All-Region and Academic All-Ivy selection for cross country and most recently competed at the NCAA East Preliminary in the 5,000 meters.
Ratcliffe, an Applied Mathematics / Economics concentrator with a 3.92 GPA, posted an outstanding senior season for the cross country team this past fall, highlighted by First Team All-Ivy honors after a standout performance at the Ivy League Championship. She also earned NCAA All-Region accolades at the NCAA Regional and secured Academic All-Ivy and USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for her performance in the classroom. A team captain, Ratcliffe earned the RIAIAW Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year Award, a testament to athletic excellence, academic success, and leadership qualities.
